A wall can be slightly wider at the ceiling than at the base. The two sides may differ in height as well. Measuring only through the center can miss that difference.
The calculator uses the larger of the two heights and the larger of the two widths. It then adds 1 inch at each edge for alignment and final trimming. Your measurements stay visible. The added material appears as a separate line in the result.
For example, a left height of 96 inches and a right height of 97 inches produce a raw height of 97 inches. The working height is shown as:
97 in + 1 in at the top + 1 in at the bottom = 99 in used
The same rule applies across the wall. If the top is 119 inches and the bottom is 120 inches, the working width becomes 122 inches after the left and right trimming allowances.
For a single accent wall, the calculator does not subtract doors or windows. Full-height strips and pattern alignment may still use material around an opening. Record each opening on your sketch and ask for a manual check when it removes a large part of the wall or divides the installation into separate areas.
The wallpaper roll calculator answers that question in three stages. First, it divides the working wall width into full-height strips. Next, it works out the cut length of each strip. Finally, it checks how many complete strips fit into one roll and rounds the number of rolls up.
Here is a simple random-match example:
The wall needs five full-width strips because four 28-inch strips cover only 112 inches. Each strip is 99 inches long, so a 360-inch roll yields three complete strips. Five strips require two rolls.
This example is for the entered dimensions only. It does not add a separate spare roll or promise that two rolls will suit another product. Check the package quantity and dye or run number before buying. Nominal roll names do not always describe the physical package in the same way.
A pattern repeat is the vertical distance from one point in a design to the next appearance of the same point. Pattern match describes how adjacent strips line up. They are related, but they are not the same input.
For a random or free match, the cut length follows the working wall height. For a straight match, the calculator rounds each strip up to a complete vertical repeat. A few extra inches can reduce the number of usable strips from one roll, which is why square footage alone can understate the quantity for patterned wallpaper.
Choose half-drop when alternate strips shift by half of the repeat. That layout depends on the exact design and cutting sequence. The current calculator shows the working size and strip count, then asks for manual verification instead of presenting a confident roll total that may be wrong.
If the wallpaper is patterned but the repeat is missing, you can choose the visible fallback allowance. The preset is 36 inches per roll. The result is marked approximate, and the same allowance is not added when an exact repeat has been entered. Check the roll label or product specifications before relying on the estimate. The seam method changes the usable width of each strip.
A butt joint brings the two edges together without overlap. Choose it only when the installation instructions call for that method.
With an overlap, each strip after the first covers part of the preceding strip. Enter the overlap specified for the wallpaper. The calculator treats that amount as consumed material, so the effective coverage is narrower than the physical roll or panel width.
A double-cut seam begins with overlapping material. The installer cuts through both layers along one line, removes the two offcuts, and brings the new edges together. The calculator can account for the temporary overlap, but it cannot judge whether the wallpaper or wall is suitable for the technique. Double cutting uses a sharp blade and can damage the surface when done incorrectly. Ask an experienced installer if the product instructions are unclear.
The overlap field starts at 0.25 inch as an editable planning value. It is not a universal rule. Replace it with the number stated for the exact wallpaper or mural.
Material type and design format are separate choices. A repeating design or mural may be offered in more than one material, and the selected product page controls what is available.
Peel-and-stick material has a self-adhesive backing, so the calculator does not add a separate adhesive quantity. Pre-pasted wallpaper is activated and installed according to its instructions. For unpasted wallpaper, the calculator can estimate adhesive packages only when you enter the verified coverage printed for that adhesive.
These choices do not tell you whether a wall is ready. Smooth painted drywall, a textured wall, an unsealed porous surface, fresh paint, and a repaired area can require different preparation. The calculator measures material. It does not approve surface compatibility. Inspect the wall and compare it with the instructions for the selected wallpaper. In mural mode, the calculator reports the working mural size and the estimated panel count from the panel width you entered. It does not apply a wallpaper pattern repeat to a mural printed as one continuous image. Confirm whether the chosen mural uses fixed sizes, custom dimensions, physical panel width, or net coverage after overlap.
